Smart Clothing from the University of Bath

There is a scene in Back To The Future II where Michael J. Fox falls into water. His futuristic clothing makes itself dry with a rush of air. The University of Bath is trying to make clothing that dries itself out.

University of Bath - Intelligent clothing inspired by pine cones

It will use a reaction to humidity (from sweat) to open its tiny fibers, allowing more air into the garment. It sounds really cool and when it comes into existence, I’m sure that all the running magazines will tell you that you can’t go for a run without it.

Just remember that people lose weight running in cotton shirts and Payless Shoe Source tennis shoes all the time. All it takes is dedication and moderation.

I had trouble sleeping last night and my period just started so I’m expecting to crash mid-day… but for now I feel fantastic. I looked at a picture of myself from this past February when I fit in my brown pants and my skinny jeans… I am totally motivated to get back to that. I probably weighed 146 or so (and of course still wanted to be less), but I looked so much better and I remember feeling much more comfortable with myself.
Goal 2: Get back to 145
Timeframe: By the end of 2005
Plan: Cut out sugar as much as possible. Concentrate on eating healthy foods and snacking on veggies, not sweets. Exercise at least 5 days a week (ideally 6). Focus on how good I feel.

A Lack of Clothing

I was trying on clothes tonight, trying to figure out what to work tomorrow. I don’t have to wear anything fancy. I just have to be presentable. I have lots of that type of clothing… except that I can’t fit into a lot of it. That clothing fits my small-10 or size 8 self… and right now I’m the large 10 version. Unacceptable. My brown pants were a staple all last year and I’ve definitely worn them a few times this summer… last October (before I got sick and started gaining) they were almost getting too big… they need to at least fit this October.
Goal 1: Get into brown pants comfortably enough to wear them to work.
Timeframe: 2 weeks (by October 7th)
Plan: Gym every morning before work & most importantly, eating well and under control!
If I don’t get into them in the next 2 weeks I’ll still live, but once I accomplish this goal I know I’ll be a lot happier with myself and feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin. Brown pants here I come!

Day 5

Exercise:
Squats
Shrugs
Shoulder Press
Crunches
Calf Raises
Tread climber - 10 minutes
Elliptical - 5 minutes
Eating:
I really don’t want to discuss my eating today. It’s all thrown off. I woke up for a while between 1:30 and 3:45 and all I could do was read and have some hot chocolate and toast to help get back to sleep. Today we’re having pizza and who knows what else for the department luncheon, so I’m just not even going to write it down. Eating just won’t be great today, it’s that simple.
Feeling:
I didn’t really want to go to the gym, but I’m glad I did as it woke me up and gave me quite a bit more energy for the day. I had a great workout and that makes me feel good about me.

Feeling:
My body keeps yelling at me for jumping into full weeks of exercise. But, I don’t do too much on any given day, so I think it’ll be ok and adjust more quickly this way. Now I just need to get the eating more under control.

Why weight loss requires strength training, even in women and seniors

Did you know that strength training is crucial for successfully losing weight and keeping it off? I'm talking about weight-bearing exercise. It doesn't have to be a huge, hulking workout where you're trying to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, it just has to be some basic strength training... more...
